Mother’s Day is just around the corner. The last of the three retail peaks… Finally. I have been doing some marketing for our flower shop Flowers by Nattrass and one of the first things I looked at is SEO. In an increasingly digitalised world SEO is more important than ever, but what is it and how can it make a difference to our Mother’s Day Sales?
Well, The Digital Marketing Institute defines it as ‘’Search Engine Optimisation’, which is the process of getting traffic from free, organic, editorial, or natural search results in search engines. It aims to improve your website’s position in search results pages. Remember, the higher the website is listed, the more people will see it.’
So, to us mere mortals it means getting our website to the top of Google so more people see and ultimately buy our beautiful blooms. I know what you may be thinking; easier said than done, in reality we all have a florists to run. Well, it isn’t as difficult as you may think.
Here are some tips and tricks to get you to the top of Google this Mother’s Day.
- Keywords and Metadata
This is step 1 for SEO and the technical side of your website. Your website company should be looking at keywords and metadata for you, if not ask them the question and make sure this is your no.1 priority for your Mother’s Day collection page.
- Make new content easy to find for web crawlers or bots
New pages are found by looking for new links on existing pages by little robots called crawlers. So make sure your there is a link to your Mother’s day collection on your home page or navigation bar.
- Use Backlinks
Put simply backlinks are links to your website from third party websites. It increases the credibility of your website.
- Optimise your website
As more and more of us swap to mobile devices, Google has started prioritising content for mobiles. If your website is not optimised this isn’t a quick fix but it is so important to get right. Talk to your website company!
- Create valuable content for Google to read
Google reads your webpage. The more valuable it rates your data, the higher up on Google you will be. If the page is informational, structure your data with questions or subheadings with the information below. I have read the sweet spot is between 1,500 and 2,000 words but the minimum number of words per page is 300. Yes, even for your ecommerce pages.

When you upload an image of your flowers onto your site make sure you are in putting alt-tag attributes;. Google is a machine; it thinks in 1s and 0s. It has no idea what img023540.jpeg is whereas if you use an alt-tag attribute of ‘Mother’s Day Spring Bouquet’ or an image called ‘Mothers-Day-Flowers.jpeg’ Google will pick up you are selling Mother’s Day Flowers. Simple yet effective. Changing this differs on different websites but have a look for your image properties.
These are great ways to kick-start your SEO for Mother’s Day. The sooner the better, so don’t delay!
