In the latest edition of ‘Our Florist’ we are taking a trip to Reading to speak with Mandy of Sonning Flowers. Mandy is the latest florist to feature in our series of blogs and we hope you’ll find her story interesting. She certainly has a unique view of one of the biggest sporting events in the UK each year so keep reading to find out more!
Anyway that’s more than enough from me so I will hand over to Mandy, we hope you enjoy…
“When I was younger my neighbour had a flower shop, so I was always interested and she actually offered me a Saturday job when I was 13! So I’ve always been in and around a flower shop and I’ve always known I had an interest in floristry.
“It’s quite interesting actually, I always thought I wanted to work in floristry and started off working as a florist but then I moved from floristry to accountancy and then back to floristry. I missed it when I left and knew I had to come back. So I started Sonning Flowers about 12 years ago, and have been at my current shop location for 5 years.
“I love everything about running a florist shop, they’re just too many to mention. From finishing a big event and standing back and looking at what you have created to receiving emails & testimonials from brides with photographs! Every day is different and that’s what I love.
“It’s the same with a favourite flower, I change my mind all the time. I’ve just been to look at today’s flower stand, and my favourite today is the white o’hara rose because of the scent; although we have some beautiful hot pink callas and I quite like the coral bouvardia. Oh, and then there is the very pale pink astilbe. It’s just too hard to choose 🙂
“A big part of our business is the wedding and events side and I’m happy we’ve done some lovely weddings this year. We’ve also done a birthday party for a member of the Dubai Royal Family which was pretty cool, and also Royal Ascot. I just love my job!
“The Royal meeting is something we do every year, it is such hard work, but also so rewarding. I love being a part of such a huge event, with flowers only being a tiny part of it. It’s great to see everyone’s hard work come together. I’m very proud that we are part of it. Originally, about 10 years ago, they contacted us after finding us on Yell.com, and gave us part of the contract. Every year since then, the contract has grown and grown and we love it!
“Moving onto Strelitzia I think I first saw Strelitzia in a trade magazine and looked on the website to see what it was about. It just made sense, and makes our life so much easier. I love the delivery list! You can set up several different drivers, and then place the orders into their van. I can even change the colour of each van to suit the driver 🙂 . The list can then be automatically sorted by postcode, but it is easy to click and drag the orders into a relevant order for delivery and we can now get a delivery list in one easy click.
“Strelitzia Support are very quick and efficient to help out when we have a problem. The team are very knowledgeable – they definitely know their stuff and are happy to help whenever we call.”
